Luang Prabang Day 2 (Jan 12): Wat Xieng Thong and night market

We were able to sleep in for the first time in 2 months because our room stayed dark and quiet in the morning 🙂  It was lovely!  We got up and had some quick breakfast at our hotel before heading out to explore.  Luang Prabang is situated on a small peninsula (300m x 1000m) and our hotel is on the tip so we walked around to the end to look at the junction of the two rivers that run on either side of the peninsula (the Mekong and the Nam San.)  We then wandered up the main street to the large temple called Wat Xieng Thong.  ‘Wat’ means monastery and there are at least a dozen in Luang Prabang but this is the largest one.  We headed in to see the various buildings.  Unfortunately we didn’t have a great description of the wat that I could find in the book (although I swear I had seen one in our book) and of course later I realized I was looking in the wrong one!  We have all of our travel books on the iPad (we didn’t want to carry half a suitcase worth of paper books) and they all have similar formatting.  Long story short, we wandered around looking at the pretty architecture and cool mosaics on the walls but we weren’t really sure what we were seeing.

After the Wat, we walked along the Mekong river side of the peninsula and found a lady selling cool paintings.  We had seen these in the market the evening before but hers were just a little different with cool hand-made paper and nice designs so we picked out 2 of them.  Not sure how we are going to get them home but we couldn’t pass them up!  We then headed towards the market to find some street food for lunch.  I had noodle soup again and Michael had a chicken, bacon, cheese sandwich.  There are a bunch of stalls lined up next to each other selling the same food and we picked a different one. The soup was better than the stall yesterday and the sandwich was good!

After lunch we headed back to the hotel.  I left Michael there to prep for his phone job interview and I went to the nearby cafe to work on my own job emails, blog, etc.  Afterwards we headed down to the night market to do some shopping and look for food.  We went to get more BBQ meat as well as sticky rice.  I hated the rice but Michael loved it.  The rice just has a weird consistency and is not like normal rice!  We had chicken wings and a few different cuts of pork with this sweet/sour/spicy dipping sauce that was great.  After dinner we bought a bunch of gifts for friends and family back home as well as a cool wooden platter that we had been looking at and finally bought.  One more thing I’m not sure how we will get home but it was just so cool!  We wandered back towards our hotel and Michael did some more interview prep before his late night (early morning for Colorado) phone call.  I FaceTimed my mom for a bit then we headed to bed late.
